Vasileios (Vassilis) Papasotiropoulos, Professor of Genetics – Plant Breeding
Professor Vasileios Papasotiropoulos graduated from the Agricultural University of Athens and holds a Ph.D. in Genetics from the Department of Biology, University of Patras, Greece. From 2001 to 2005 he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Applied Genomics (CAG), Rutgers University, USA. His research interests focus on genetic diversity of aromatic and medicinal plants (MAPS) and horticultural crops including traditional cultivars. His goal is to identify genotypes with superior traits and to investigate the relationship between genotypic and phenotypic diversity including morphological traits, the chemical composition of fruits and other plant’s derivatives. Using genetic approaches, he studies traditional cultivars and wild endemic plants to devise strategies for the preservation of plant genetic resources, as well as for the delineation of the phylogenetic relationships of several plant taxa. He is a member of the Hellenic Scientific Society of Plant Genetics and Breeding (HSSPGB) and the European Association for Research on Plant Breeding (EUCARPIA). He participates in the Board of Directors of the Aroma Innovation Hub at Patras Science Park, aiming to promote research and innovation in MAPs.
Eleni Liveri, Biologist, MSc, PhD
Mrs. Liveri graduated from Department of Biology, University of Patras, and holds an M.Sc. of “Ecology – Management and Protection of Natural Environment” and Ph.D. of the same Department. From 2014 to 2021 she was working as scientific collaborator / scholar at various research projects of Laboratory of Botany (University of Patras, Greece), while during 2015 and 2018 she was trained in molecular techniques at University of Regensburg (Germany) and University of Florida (U.S.A.). Since 2021 she is working at Laboratory of Agricultural Genetics and Breeding of the Department of Agriculture (University of Patras, Greece) where she mainly focuses on genetic diversity of interesting plant taxa of Greece and the development of new strawberry cultivars improved in aroma and flavor using genetic markers. Her research interests focus on Plant Systematics, Cytotaxonomy, Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution, Genetic Diversity, Biodiversity and Biogeography. She is member of 3 Scientific Societies and reviewer in 4 scientific journals. She has 13 research papers, 6 presentations in conferences, as well as she has been awarded with “OPTIMA” medal for the best research work of 2018.
